Numbers needed for a successful newspaper

The numbers count in most things and I heard this weekend through a contact in the newspaper publishing industry about one important number in his sector.

In newspaper publishing in the digital age, you need a certain amount of unique visitors to your website for you to be taken seriously advertisers. That number is 300,000 visitors per month. Below that figure and you really are not going to be provide the advertisers with a decent enough return on their investment.

Given that the recently launched 'digital' newspaper 'The Daily' has in the region of 100,000 subscribers so far, then it looks like that its life will be a short one.

  1. It still depends on the demographics that your publication is targeting. If it caters to a specific niche or city, 100,000 subscribers is not that bad. But if it will be a national newspaper with a general audience, that number is too few.

    1. Thanks for your comment. The person I know who was talking about this topic runs a business which owns a number of regional newspapers. But, I don't know the details about his circulation numbers. It will be interesting to know.

  2. The problem with this is that since they have readership from those who buy printed copies, less people would opt to visit the websites.

    1. Hi there,

      Why is that so?

Are you saying that people who read a newspaper would never choose to read their online version?

  3. This just shows that stats always matter. That's how it pretty much works in the business industry. You'll always have to reach a specific number to have a growth or be noticed by investors. If you fail to reach the standard mark, then you pretty much give way to other competitors.
